Owen Chenery, flooring expert at Floor Giants, has identified seven cleaning products that should never be used on wood floors due to risks of discolouration, warping, or damage to the protective finish. The list includes common household items like bleach, vinegar, and ammonia-based cleaners.
Bleach Causes Fading and Discolouration
According to Chenery, bleach is far too aggressive for many flooring types, including laminate, vinyl, and wood. It can cause fading, discolouration, or significant damage. He advises that any accidental spills should be addressed immediately to avoid colour changes or dullness from prolonged use.
Ammonia-Based Cleaners Wear Down Protective Coatings
Ammonia-based cleaners are abrasive and can quickly wear down the protective coating on floors, leaving them vulnerable to marks and stains. Chenery recommends using pH-neutral floor cleaners instead, as ammonia is better suited for glass or mirrors.
Vinegar Strips Protective Finishes
While vinegar is often recommended as a natural cleaner, its acidic properties can strip away or dull protective finishes on hardwood and laminate flooring. Chenery warns that safer alternatives should be used to avoid harming the floor's lifespan.
Steam Mops Risk Warping Laminate
Steam mops can allow moisture to penetrate flooring joints, heightening the risk of warping, especially on moisture-sensitive surfaces like laminate. Chenery advises avoiding them unless the manufacturer explicitly states they are safe.
Abrasive Scrubbers Create Scratches
Using harsh scrubbers can remove protective coatings, create scratches, and reduce durability. Chenery recommends soft microfibre cloths designed for flooring to effectively target dirt without causing damage.
Furniture Polish Leaves Slippery Residue
Furniture polish is not designed for flooring and can leave a slippery residue that makes surfaces unsafe to walk on. It builds up over time, requiring more frequent cleaning. pH-neutral floor cleaner is a better alternative.
Excessive Water Causes Warping
Applying too much water during cleaning can lead to warping. Spills should be dealt with immediately. Chenery emphasizes that using the right products and methods enhances the longevity of flooring.
