While many gardeners believe January is a time for hibernation, horticultural experts insist it's a perfect month for vital lawn maintenance. Performing a few key tasks now, while grass growth is slow, can set the stage for a verdant and robust lawn in the spring.
Essential Winter Lawn Maintenance Tasks
According to guidance from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), reported by the Express, there are four primary jobs to focus on during January. These are repairing bare patches, levelling bumps and hollows, neatening lawn edges, and addressing waterlogging. Completing this winter checklist rewards gardeners with a significantly healthier lawn as the weather warms.
Repair Bare and Threadbare Patches
January is highlighted as the ideal time to fix areas where grass has thinned or died, particularly around the lawn's perimeter. The RHS recommends a technique known as turf patching. If you have spare turf available elsewhere in your garden, you can cut a section and use it to fill the bare spot, ensuring a seamless repair.
Level Out Bumps and Hollows
For an uneven lawn surface, a simple method can create a smooth finish. Cut an H-shape into the turf over the problem area and carefully peel the grass back. For a hollow, add topsoil to raise the level. For a bump, remove some soil to lower it. Once level, re-lay the turf, push the edges together firmly, and tread it gently into place.
Create Crisp, Defined Lawn Edges
A sharp border instantly makes a lawn look well-kept. Use a half-moon edging iron or a flat spade to redefine overgrown edges. The RHS also advises maintaining a shallow gutter, about 7.5 centimetres wide, around the lawn's edge. This trench helps prevent grass from creeping into your flower beds and borders.
Combat Waterlogging and Improve Drainage
After heavy January rain, watch for soggy patches where water pools. To improve drainage, vigorously spike the affected area with a garden fork. Then, brush a mix of sharp sand and loam into the holes. This allows water to penetrate deeper into the soil, reducing surface saturation.

While not specific to January, the RHS stresses a vital rule for winter lawn care: avoid walking on a frosty lawn. Frozen grass blades are brittle and easily damaged, which can leave unsightly brown footprints that linger for weeks.
