As the UK continues to experience scorching temperatures this summer, a gardening expert has identified three plants that require no watering to thrive. In a TikTok video, the expert known as @viewfromthepottingbench recommended lavender, echinacea, and agapanthus as ideal choices for heatwave conditions.
Lavender: A Classic Drought-Resistant Choice
Lavender is described as an absolute classic and a must-have in every garden. This Mediterranean shrub is accustomed to heat and can tolerate dry soil, making it extremely drought-resistant. It is also hardy, long-flowering, highly scented, and adored by bees and pollinating insects. According to the expert, “This one is an absolute classic and is a must-have in every garden. We all know about lavender, but this really is one plant that we all need.”
Echinacea: Colourful and Low-Maintenance
Echinacea, also known as coneflower, is another drought-tolerant plant that comes in a wide range of colours. The expert noted, “The next one is one of my absolute favourite plants.” It features large, open flower heads on tall stems that attract butterflies and pollinators. Echinacea thrives in most soils and is happy in full sun. It also seeds itself around the garden, providing new plants with zero effort or cost.
Agapanthus: Stunning and Resilient
The expert saved agapanthus for last, calling it “the best until last.” These South African plants produce white, purple, or blue flowers on big flower heads atop tall stems. The expert advised planting several rather than just one and repeating them throughout the garden. “The trick with this one is to plant a few, not just one, and repeat it throughout your garden. It has amazing root systems, which means it’s perfect for dividing and splitting in your garden,” he explained.
These three plants offer a low-maintenance solution for gardeners looking to enjoy a vibrant garden without constant watering during hot weather.
