Use a Simple 10p Item to Deter Wasps from Nesting This Summer
10p Item Deters Wasps: Simple Summer Hack

Homeowners could help prevent wasps from building nests on their property by using a simple DIY wasp nest deterrent that involves a 10p item.

Wasps prove a constant nuisance in gardens throughout Britain as the temperature rises, particularly if they decide to build a nest on your premises. While seeking refuge, wasps can display aggression towards people, and a wasp nest can be difficult to eliminate once it's been built, so stopping one from developing in the first place is much better.

Simple and Affordable Solution

Thankfully, there's an affordable and straightforward method to stop wasps from building a nest in your house, garden, shed or garage. All you need is a plastic bag and some string. Social media gardening specialist @gardening.with.ish has revealed how these everyday household items can serve as wasp repellents.

He explained: "What we do is we take the plastic bag, we fold it amongst itself in one corner and we get a nice point." A plastic bag cost as little as 10p. By folding the bag inwards, air gets trapped inside. Ish showed how the bag takes on a cone-shaped appearance before using the string and tying the bag shut, reports the Express.

Territorial Trick

He explained: "What you are doing is creating a fake wasp nest because wasps are incredibly territorial, hence why they can feel a little bit aggressive when they are around you. They are defending their space."

Ish explained that by hanging the plastic bag, which resembles a wasp nest, the insects will believe another colony has already claimed the territory and will move on. The expert continued: "They won't go near the space; in fact, they will stay away."

Optimal Timing and Placement

According to Ish, spring is the optimal time to use this method, as larger wasps generally begin emerging during these months. Ish recommends placing your plastic bag near sheds or hanging it from a tree in your garden.

The theory underpinning this approach is that wasps will build their nests at a greater distance from your garden, while still returning to pollinate your plants and forage for food. Nevertheless, they will display less aggression as they will believe competing wasps have already occupied the area.

Materials and Cost

For his trick, Ish utilised a black bin bag, though he notes you can alternatively use a burlap sack or an empty compost bag. If you need a fresh bag to create your fake wasp nest, plastic bags can be purchased from most major supermarkets and retailers for as little as 10p.

Ish concluded: "As a result, your home will be protected, your plants will still be pollinated, and you didn't use a single chemical."
