Woman Warns Parents About Naming Kids After Songs After 'Jolene' Hell
Woman Warns Parents About Naming Kids After Songs

A woman has warned parents against naming children after favourite songs or movies, sharing her own experience of being named Jolene after Dolly Parton's hit. The 43-year-old says the name has caused her years of teasing and embarrassment.

Life as Jolene

The woman, who shared her story on Reddit, explained that her parents named her after the 1970s song. She has spent most of her life hearing people sing the famous tune whenever they hear her name. Her sister faced even worse bullying, as her name was Candida, a term for a yeast infection.

She said: "My name is Jolene, and I had to grow up hearing people sing the song to me my entire life. My mum got mad when I told her I'm changing my name to something less stupid." She added that people have treated her like the woman in the song, assuming she is a homewrecker.

Plans to Change Name

Fed up with the constant references, she plans to legally change her name to something plain and normal. She urges parents to think carefully before choosing pop-culture inspired names, saying: "Name your kids something they can live with."

Social Media Reactions

Many users sympathised with her. One said: "So sad! Jolene is such a pretty name. People need to get over that song." Another shared a similar experience, having been named after a pet name from an old song. A third Jolene said: "Early 40s and I think I'm ready to legally change it. I can't take it anymore."
