Flies can be a major nuisance during summer, rapidly invading homes, but a simple 10-second task each day can keep them away permanently. Journalist Katherine McPhillips, who battled a significant fly problem, discovered that pouring boiling water down the sink drain is an incredibly effective solution.
The Hidden Problem: Sink Drains
McPhillips initially kept her windows shut at night, yet flies still sneaked into her kitchen. She realized the issue was the sink drain, which provides an ideal breeding ground—warm, damp, and often harboring food debris. Hidden from view, drains can allow infestations to develop undetected, with flies depositing eggs that make elimination harder.
The Simple Solution: Boiling Water
Spotting the infestation early, McPhillips found that spending a few seconds pouring boiling water down the drain destroys any flies or larvae and helps shift grease that attracts pests. Flies have an exceptional sense of smell and are drawn to decomposing food odors; clean drains eliminate these smells. McPhillips dislikes insect sprays due to fumes and chemical residue, making boiling water a preferred method.
By spending just 10 seconds each morning on the drain, it's possible to eliminate flies entirely and keep windows open without worry. Pouring boiling water last thing at night ensures any flies lurking in the kitchen are dealt with before morning. It's also important to remove grease, food scraps, or debris from the sink overnight.
Additional Tips for Fly Control
Pouring soda crystals down the drain before flushing with water naturally breaks down grease and prevents blockages. Placing a simple apple cider vinegar trap near fruit bowls or windowsills is also effective, especially when windows are open. Since flies are drawn to food smells, storing fruit in the fridge and replacing bin bags daily are worthwhile measures.
McPhillips reports that since using the boiling water method, vinegar trap, and storing food away, she has had no insects in her house. July is peak fly season, but this routine offers a chemical-free, low-cost solution.
