Tyson Fury will not earn a penny from his fight with Mariusz Wach, with his purse going to charity instead. The 37-year-old will take on the Polish veteran, 46, in front of just 1,500 fans at the Max Muay Thai Stadium in Pattaya, which should be a warm-up for a much-anticipated bout with Anthony Joshua later this year.
Fury's Charitable Gesture
Fury, who is worth £148 million, made around £150 million from his two fights with Oleksandr Usyk but there'll be no big payday for fighting Wach. In fact, Fury will fight for free, having pledged to donate his share of the purse to the Father Ray Foundation, a charity in Pattaya that supports orphans, children with disabilities and underprivileged youngsters.
Fury, who has spent time with the charity ahead of the fight, said: "I didn't want to give it to a random charity I didn't know. I found out about that one, did research into it, went down there and met all the kids and decided that was definitely the one. A great foundation, a great cause."
Fight Details and Future Plans
While it is unclear how much the non-televised bout will generate, it is sure to be a significant figure for the charity. Fury's fight on Friday will not be broadcast live but will be shown as part of his Netflix documentary series, 'At Home with the Furys.'
Fury has beaten the likes of Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder down the years, but he thinks the world still has not seen the best of him. He said: "I'll always be a big name. I still feel the best is yet to come. I don't feel like the world’s seen the best of Tyson Fury yet. I've been over here [Thailand] since December. Beautiful people, beautiful place. I feel at peace with everything, whereas before I had a lot of pressure on me. I thrive better in a warmer climate and I feel rejuvenated."
Weigh-In Results
Fury weighed in 26 lbs lighter than Wach. The Gypsy King scaled 265 lbs, having clocked in at 267.9 lbs before outpointing Arslanbek Makhmudov last time out in April. Wach came in at 291.4 lbs – 17 lbs heavier than his last fight in March.
