Protest Outside Proposed 'Number 10 North' with Burnham Masks

Campaigners and trade unionists staged a protest outside what is set to become Number 10 North today (July 16) on the eve of Andy Burnham's coronation as leader of the Labour Party. Members of the Trade Union Council gathered on Great Ancoats Street, site of the former Toys R Us store, which has been tipped as a potential option for his government's northern outpost.

Protest Details

The M.E.N previously reported that part of his team are set to begin working from northern headquarters from the moment he enters office. An interim base will be used while a permanent home is developed, with the long-term headquarters not expected to be completed until 2028 - but the location has not yet been released for security reasons.

Protestors gathered outside the site in Manchester city centre bearing Lebanese and Palestine flags - and carried cardboard cut-outs of the iconic Number 10 front door and perhaps its most consistent resident, Larry the cat.

Organisers' Statement

“Andy Burnham has often spoken about taking Manchester's values to Westminster,” organisers said. “On the eve of his confirmation as Labour leader, Mancunians who have lived under his Mayoralty are coming together to demand ‘More Than Manchesterism’ and set out what Burnham should do when he reaches Downing Street.

“The event combines political theatre with a serious point: people who have lived under Burnham’s Mayoralty don’t think “Manchesterism” is enough.

“Speakers representing more than a dozen organisations will address issues including public transport, housing, workers’ rights, Palestine, higher education, the cost of living, healthcare, the right to protest, racism, public services, militarism and climate change.

“Together, they will paint a picture of the challenges facing the country and of their determination to campaign for a new national direction.”
