Hibs fan dies suddenly aged 26 as family heartbroken

Cameron Shields, a 26-year-old Hibs fan, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Edinburgh on July 15. His sudden death has left his family and friends devastated.

Family tributes

His mum Georgina, dad Kevin, step-mum Kirsty, and sisters Melissa and Emma have been left heartbroken. Mourners attending Cameron's funeral are asked to wear green or Hibs merchandise.

His sister Melissa told Edinburgh Live that Cameron loved to make people laugh and had a 'big presence.' She said: "He was absolutely hilarious and would make everyone laugh. He loved darts and was a huge Hibs fan. He took to darts like a duck to water and told everyone he was going to be a champion one day. Even if it was a sad situation, Cameron would try and make you laugh about something."

She added: "Honestly, Cameron was just such a character. He was 6'4, so you could always see him and he had a big presence. It was just all so unexpected but he passed very peacefully."

Second tragedy for family

This is the second tragedy for the family, following the death of step-dad Steven MacGowan in February 2025 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Melissa said the unexpected loss has left the family home quiet, as Cameron was so 'full of life.'

She said: "He's going to be such a huge loss and it's come as such a shock because he was so young and healthy. He had all these plans and dreams he wanted to achieve. Our little sister Emma grew up with Cameron and he was quite a protective brother to her. He would always make sure she was okay. Obviously we didn't expect such a loss and so soon after our step-dad as well. The house feels so quiet without him because he was so tall and full of life."

Melissa also noted that neighbours have commented on how quiet the street is without him, as he was always saying hello and singing and dancing on the street.

Fundraiser for funeral costs

Family friend Nicole Swann created a fundraiser to help with funeral expenses, which has already raised £1,500. The GoFundMe page reads: "On 15th July, we sadly lost Cameron at just 26 years old. His passing has left his family, friends and everyone who knew him completely heartbroken."

It continues: "We are raising funds to help support Cameron's family during this incredibly difficult time. The money raised will go towards funeral costs and any additional expenses, allowing his loved ones the time and space to grieve without the added financial burden. Any donation, no matter how big or small, would be deeply appreciated. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this page to help us reach as many people as possible. Thank you for your kindness, generosity and support in remembering Cameron."
