Children in Coltness who spent the summer holidays searching for a local playpark are now demanding action from the council. A petition, organized by residents, has been gathering signatures to call for a new play area in their community.
Petition Launched
The petition, led by Coltness woman Delia O’Hagan, highlights that the nearest equipped playground is Belhaven Park, about a 24-minute walk away. It notes that a playpark once existed in the area but was removed and never replaced.
The petition asks North Lanarkshire Council to assess the former playpark site at Lauder Crescent, or if unsuitable, consider Lauder Park or other council-owned grassed areas for a new neighbourhood playpark. It also requests consultation with local residents to provide a modern, accessible playground.
Community Support
Local resident Les Hoey has backed the children’s campaign, stating that a park in Lauder Crescent was taken away years ago and never replaced. He mentioned that councillors have been approached about funding, and Clare Adamson MSP is also set to take up the matter.
The petition has been signed by residents from Lauder Crescent, North Dryburgh Road, Buchan Street, Louden Street, and Langholm Crescent over the past few weeks.
Council Response
A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council said they have not yet received the petition, but once submitted, it will be processed according to the council’s petitions procedure. The council welcomes opportunities to engage with communities and remains committed to investing in high-quality play spaces, recently opening two new play facilities in Wishaw.
