Streets in Cardiff have been blighted by flytipping, with furniture piled high near residents' homes and a kitchen sink strewn along a footpath. A video taken by a resident shows the eyesore of rubbish left on Rhymney Street in Cathays, where cardboard boxes have been left with furniture and an overflowing skip on the residential road.
Student Area Affected
The road, where residents are predominantly university students, has had issues with rubbish left in the street in previous years. Along with Rhymney Street, flytipping is also apparent in other streets in Cathays, including Woodville Road.
Waste on Woodville Road
At Woodville Road, residents are met with more waste that has been left on the pavement and in front of gardens. A kitchen sink has been spotted in the street, as well as tall piles of cardboard and other household furniture.
Council Response
Cardiff Council is condemning those who flytip and reminding residents they'll face a fixed penalty notice or court action if they're caught. The council said it would send waste enforcement officers to investigate the issues at Rhymney Street.
A spokesperson for the council said: "Flytipping blights neighbourhoods, damages the environment, places an unfair financial burden on taxpayers, and undermines community pride by turning public spaces into eyesores and potential health hazards. Following this report, waste enforcement officers will visit Rhymney Street to investigate and take appropriate action if evidence is found."
They added: "Our message to those who continue to damage the environment we all share is simple: please stop. If you are caught, you will either receive a fixed penalty notice or face court action. If anyone spots flytipping, the most effective way to report it is via our website (https://www.cardiff.gov.uk/flytipping) or through the Cardiff Gov app. This ensures we receive an exact location and all the information necessary to investigate."
