The Paradise, a British costume drama that originally aired on the BBC in 2012, has found a new audience on streaming services. Adapted from the 1883 French novel Au Bonheur des Dames by Émile Zola, the series is reimagined in the North East of England and inspired by the real-life story of Aristide Boucicaut, founder of the iconic Parisian department store Le Bon Marché.
Plot and Setting
The series begins in 1875 and follows the lives of employees, customers, and business associates of a thriving department store. When a fresh recruit, Denise Lovett (played by Joanna Vanderham), arrives, she disrupts the status quo and sparks competition among colleagues. The store, called The Paradise, becomes a microcosm of Victorian society, exploring themes of ambition, love, and class.
Principal photography took place at Lambton Castle, which was converted into an 1870s department store, along with a purpose-built Victorian-style thoroughfare. Biddick Hall, also on the Lambton estate, doubled as Lord Glendenning's home.
Cast and Reception
The cast includes Joanna Vanderham as Denise Lovett, Peter Wright as Edmund Lovett, and Emun Elliott as John Moray. The performances have been widely praised. One reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes said: "Perfect, although I wish there were more seasons! I love this show so very much! Wonderful actors, storylines and a show I will watch again." Another added: "BBC's period drama, The Paradise, has all the right moves. Its sexuality is subtle and charming. Its characters are magnetic and distinct."
Despite critical acclaim, the show was cancelled after two series. The second series aired in 2014, and the BBC confirmed there would be no third. Fans continue to demand more episodes.
Where to Watch
The Paradise is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime, or free of charge on U, with rental options on other platforms.
