Keira Knightley is set to make her highly anticipated return to London's West End after nearly 15 years, starring in the world premiere stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning film The Lives Of Others.
Star-Studded Cast
The 41-year-old actress, best known for her iconic roles in Pride And Prejudice and the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, will appear alongside Bridgerton's Luke Thompson and Game Of Thrones' Stephen Dillane. The production is scheduled to run at the Adelphi Theatre from October 2026 through January 2027.
Plot and Setting
Set in 1984 East Germany, the play centres on a writer (Thompson) and his actress partner (Knightley) who find themselves under state surveillance. As the Stasi officer (Dillane) monitors them for signs of subversion, his own existence begins to transform. The story serves as a powerful reminder of the fragility of freedom and the courage required to hold on to it.
Creative Team
Adapted and directed by Robert Icke, known for The Doctor, the production is staged by Sonia Friedman Productions, the company behind current West End hits including Paddington The Musical, The Book Of Mormon, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Friedman expressed her excitement, stating: "I've been obsessed with The Lives Of Others ever since I first saw it... and there is no-one better than Robert Icke to bring this to life onstage."
Knightley's Stage History
The Olivier-nominated star first appeared on the West End in a 2009 staging of The Misanthrope, later returning for the 2011 revival of The Children's Hour opposite Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss. In recent years, she has concentrated more on film roles, making this return to the stage a significant event.
The Original Film
The 2006 film, helmed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, secured numerous accolades including the Oscar for Best International Film, the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language, and the British Independent Film Award for Best Foreign Independent Film. The full cast for the stage adaptation has yet to be revealed.
