Trigger Point writer explains villain twist after dramatic finale

The season finale of Trigger Point has revealed the mastermind behind a series of coordinated terrorist attacks that have devastated London's explosives officer Lana Washington, played by Vicky McClure. In a shocking twist, Karl Maguire (Warren Brown) is unmasked as the orchestrator of the far-right extremist plot.

Writer Daniel Brierley told RadioTimes.com that the team worried about making Karl too obvious as a villain. 'It's clear when Karl turns up that he's the villain,' Brierley said. 'We wanted to set up this duplicity, to make it look like he was so obviously the villain that he couldn't possibly be the villain.'

Brierley described Karl and Lana as 'different sides of the same coin', noting that Lana could have become like Karl due to their shared experiences in conflict. 'It's only because Lana had the strength and courage to fight against this instinct that she was able to survive and thrive,' he added.

A key moment in the finale occurs when Karl professes his love for Lana at a police cordon, but she rejects him. Brierley suggested that if Lana had reciprocated, Karl might have abandoned his plan. 'At that moment, he's still thinking, 'There's hope.' But once that hope is gone, there's nothing left for him,' Brierley explained.

Karl's motive is revealed in an intense monologue: he targeted parliamentary candidate Ayesha Campbell-Khan for covering up the deaths of British soldiers transporting chemical weapons in Afghanistan. The calling card '1912' left at attack scenes corresponds to the element numbers of potassium and magnesium, spelling 'K Mg' – Karl's initials.
