Tom Hardy's abrupt departure from the crime drama MobLand is set to cost producers millions, as the series two finale must be reworked. The actor, 48, will not return for a third series following reported clashes with producers, leaving showrunners scrambling to alter the almost-complete ending.
Hardy played gangster fixer Harry Da Souza alongside Dame Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan. His exit, first reported by Puck newsletter's Matthew Belloni, stems from tensions with producers Jez Butterworth and David Glasser during production of the second series. Paramount+ had already commissioned a third series before filming wrapped.
An insider told The Sun that Hardy's role is pivotal, so his absence in series three requires an explanation. This means altering the second series finale, which has just been completed, costing millions in additional development, filming, and editing. It remains unclear if Hardy will return for new scenes or if producers will creatively tie up the story.
Hardy had previously mentioned taking time off due to physical strain from his roles, citing knee surgeries, a herniated disc, and sciatica. Despite the exit, Helen Mirren showed support on Instagram, writing: 'Love you now and always, Helen.'
Created by Ronan Bennett, MobLand follows Hardy's character protecting the Harrigan family amid a London gang war. The second series was set to expand internationally, touching on organised crime across Europe. Representatives for Hardy and Paramount+ have been approached for comment.
