Taron Egerton Dismisses James Bond Speculation at Sydney Festival
The British actor Taron Egerton has effectively ruled himself out of contention for the coveted role of James Bond, delivering his verdict during an appearance at the 2026 Tropfest in Sydney on Sunday evening. Egerton, aged 36 and best known for his starring role in The Kingsman film franchise, was widely considered one of several serious candidates to replace Daniel Craig as the seventh actor to portray 007.
Humble Rejection of Iconic Role
Speaking to Rolling Stone Australia from the red carpet, Egerton played down his chances with notable humility. 'I don't think I'm right for James Bond,' he stated. 'I've never felt that that was me. I think there's great candidates for it, and I think it's obviously a huge cinematic institution, I don't want to be dismissive about it as a thing. I just feel that my path is less kind of grand and idealised.'
This marks not the first time Egerton has dismissed Bond speculation. Last year, he told Collider that he considered himself too 'messy' for the suave secret agent role, suggesting younger actors would be better suited.
Fan Reactions Focus on New Look
While Egerton's humility was praised by many fans on social media following the exchange, others were more preoccupied with his unexpected new appearance. The actor sported a dramatic buzz cut, which some erroneously speculated indicated he was going bald. The look is understood to be for his upcoming role in the comedy Everybody Wants to F*ck Me.
Social media reactions were mixed:
- One viewer commented: 'I swear he had hair.'
- Another joked: 'A Connery toupee wouldn't help.'
- A third added: 'Fair, also his balding would be an issue.'
More supportive responses highlighted Egerton's self-awareness:
- 'Taron downplaying himself while the rest of us know he'd absolutely kill it. Humble king behavior.'
- 'Honestly, Taron choosing his own path shows a lot of self awareness, not every actor is meant for 007.'
- 'In case anyone is wondering: He shaved for his next film.'
Future of the James Bond Franchise
The identity of the next Bond remains officially unannounced, but significant developments behind the scenes have been confirmed. Dune director Denis Villeneuve has signed on to direct the untitled Bond film, also serving as executive producer alongside Tanya Lapointe. Producers will include Amy Pascal and David Heyman.
This follows Amazon's massive $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM Studios, which included the James Bond franchise. The streaming giant obtained full creative control through a deal struck with longtime franchise caretakers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson in March 2025. While financial terms were undisclosed, rumours suggested the agreement was valued at upwards of $1 billion.
Barbara and Michael had overseen the franchise since 1995, when their father Albert R. Broccoli ceded control of his Eon Productions company to them. Their departure marks a significant shift in the stewardship of one of cinema's most enduring institutions.
