Susanna Reid broke down in tears on Tuesday's Good Morning Britain as she interviewed the parents of Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole, a 20-year-old who drowned in the River Thames after jumping in to save a woman. Reid told them, 'My heart is absolutely broken for you.'
Folajimi, known as Jimi, and a friend jumped into the river just after midnight on Saturday after alerting police about a woman in the water. Jimi's body was found six hours later, while his friend and the woman were rescued.
Jimi's parents, Michael Adewola, 63, and Olasunkanmi Adewole, 54, appeared via video link. His father said, 'I want the government to honour him because the boy, Jimi was a good son to me. He was the breadwinner of the house.'
Jimi's best friend Bernard also appeared in the studio and broke down as he recalled the night. The family has criticised the search effort, saying it was called off too quickly. City of London Police said the search was stood down after an hour, but Jimi's body was later found.
A fundraiser launched in Jimi's memory has raised over £40,000.
