Susan Sarandon's West End debut has been cut short after her play Mary Page Marlowe closed just one week into its run. The production, which also starred Andrea Riseborough, was scheduled to run from 23 September to 1 November at the Old Vic theatre.
The play, written by Tracy Letts, explores the life of an Ohio accountant and mother of two across 70 years, with multiple actors portraying the title character. Sarandon and Riseborough played the same woman at different ages.
Sarandon had expressed excitement and terror ahead of her UK stage debut, while Riseborough returned to the stage after a 15-year absence. The production was part of Matthew Warchus's final season as artistic director of the Old Vic.
No official reason has been given for the early closure, which surprised audiences and critics alike. The Old Vic has not commented on whether refunds will be offered.
