Raymond Spin-Off Axed Over 'Too Old' Cast Says Creator

Creator Reveals Axed Everybody Loves Raymond Spin-Off Over Age Concerns

Phil Rosenthal, the creator of the beloved sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, has disclosed that a spin-off series centered on Brad Garrett's character Robert Barone was actively in development following the original show's conclusion in 2005. During a recent appearance on Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Dinner's On Me podcast, Rosenthal shared that he pitched the project, which would have focused on Robert and his wife Amy, portrayed by Rosenthal's real-life spouse Monica Horan.

Proposed Cast and Network Rejection

According to Rosenthal, the spin-off would have expanded to include Amy's parents and brother, with roles intended for acclaimed actors Fred Willard, Georgia Engel, and Chris Elliott. Despite assembling what he described as a 'proven' cast capable of delivering strong ratings, the network ultimately rejected the proposal. Rosenthal claimed the decision was based on the perception that the cast was 'too old,' with everyone involved being over 40 years old at the time.

'You know why they said they wouldn't give us more than a pilot? Everyone was over 40,' Rosenthal stated. 'They said the business changed during the nine years of Raymond.' Notably, Brad Garrett was approximately 45 years old when Everybody Loves Raymond ended its run, while Monica Horan was around 42.

Background on the Original Series

Everybody Loves Raymond enjoyed a successful nine-season tenure from 1997 to 2005, chronicling the life of sports writer Ray Barone (Ray Romano) and his wife Debra (Patricia Heaton) as they navigated living near Ray's overbearing mother Marie, outspoken father Frank, and envious brother Robert. The show remains a cultural touchstone, with the cast reuniting last year for a 30th-anniversary special on CBS.

However, the reunion was bittersweet, as several original cast members had passed away, including Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle, who played Marie and Frank Barone, respectively. Additionally, Sawyer Sweeten, who portrayed one of Ray and Debra's twin sons, died by suicide in 2015.

No Plans for a Reboot

Ray Romano has firmly dismissed any speculation about a potential reboot of Everybody Loves Raymond, citing the absence of key cast members. 'We're never gonna do one, because we're missing three cast members, three family members,' he explained. Rosenthal echoed this sentiment, adding, 'It wouldn't be the same. We have too much respect for the show itself and for the beautiful audience.'

Rosenthal's Post-Raymond Success

Since the series concluded, Phil Rosenthal has achieved significant success with his own culinary travel series, Somebody Feed Phil. The popular program has aired eight seasons on Netflix and is scheduled to transition to YouTube in 2027. Additionally, Rosenthal has ventured into the restaurant industry as the owner of Max & Helen's, a highly sought-after diner in Los Angeles named after his parents.

The Larchmont establishment has attracted a diverse clientele, including food bloggers, celebrities, and dedicated Everybody Loves Raymond fans since its opening in late October. Notable visitors have ranged from Jane Fonda and Gwyneth Paltrow to The Bear actor Adam Shapiro and realtor Drew Scott. Patricia Heaton also praised the diner on Instagram, calling it 'comfort food done right… welcoming, delicious, and full of heart.'

Rosenthal collaborated with renowned Los Angeles chef Nancy Silverton to create Max & Helen's, leveraging her expertise from popular cookbooks and acclaimed California restaurants. The menu is a key draw, complementing the celebrity appeal. Brad Garrett, who won three Emmy awards for his role as Robert Barone, remains a celebrated figure from the original series, underscoring the missed opportunity of the axed spin-off.
