Hemky Madera, who played Pote Galvez in the Netflix series Queen of the South, has revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic was responsible for the show's premature end. In an exclusive interview with the Mirror, the 49-year-old actor stated that the series was originally planned for seven seasons but was cut short after five due to the pandemic.
Madera also disclosed that there were plans for a spin-off focusing on his character, Pote. 'Unfortunately, the pandemic killed it. We would’ve had seven seasons in total instead of five and there was a big possibility of a spin-off for Pote,' he explained. The actor expressed disappointment but acknowledged the broader losses experienced worldwide.
Queen of the South concluded in 2021 with Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga) faking her death and leaving her criminal life behind. The series was loosely based on the Spanish telenovela La Reina del Sur and the novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte.
Madera remains open to reprising his role, saying, 'I’m always here. I love it. You never know, maybe it will come back for a TV movie some years later.' He is currently involved in other projects, including season three of Euphoria and the upcoming Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.
