Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister insists Argentina's players were blinded by the love of their fans when they turned their backs on Spain lifting the World Cup on Sunday evening.
Mac Allister and team-mates were widely condemned by football fans around the world for appearing to show a lack of sportsmanship as Spain celebrated their 1-0 extra-time victory.
Argentina's post-match actions explained
Led by captain Lionel Messi, Argentina's players turned away from Rodri and the victorious Spain squad lifting the trophy, instead focusing on their own supporters.
Several Argentina players were in tears as they wore their silver medals around their necks, and Mac Allister says the support from fans, family and friends made the situation overwhelming.
Mac Allister's Instagram message
Writing on Instagram, the Reds midfielder and 2022 World Cup winner said: "We were so close… that's why it hurts so much. But no one can take away everything we experienced during this World Cup. What they made us feel is extraordinary.
"We had to suffer, there were adversities, but we overcame them TOGETHER. Let's never forget this, please: TOGETHER we are stronger than anyone."

Just as I will never forget that day in 2022 when, with our World Cup medals, we walked, cried, and celebrated with our people through the streets of Buenos Aires, this Cup also left us with two unforgettable images that reflect the people's connection to this team and that are a balm to the soul of every Argentinian."

Argentina's performance and reaction
Argentina have also been ridiculed by many, including fans of beaten semi-final opponents England, for their performance in the final, where they failed to register a single shot in the 90 minutes.
The South Americans, who had Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez sent off at the end of normal time, only managed two efforts at goal in the entire 120 minutes, with the first coming from Messi three minutes from the end.
Mac Allister continued: "Let's cry, because we're Argentinians and we always want to win. But after crying, let's get up, unite, and keep going, because this isn't over. And these past few days, my mum reminded me of a popular saying: 'If there's a rematch, don't be afraid.'"
