Jury Duty's Company Retreat Sequel: A High-Stakes TV Hoax Returns

If there was ever a television show that seemed destined for a single season, it would be Jury Duty. The Amazon series became a surprise hit in 2023 by executing an audacious stunt: convincing Ronald Gladden he was part of a courtroom documentary, while everyone around him was an actor. The show's warmth and humour, coupled with its Peabody award win, left fans wondering how a second season could possibly match up.

Doubts and Ambitions for Season Two

Director Jake Szymanski admits the team had significant reservations. "We did not know if it could be done again ... It is a lot of work, and there's a lot of risk," he says. However, Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat has defied expectations. This season follows Anthony Norman, a 25-year-old temp worker from Nashville, who believes he's participating in a documentary about a hot sauce company's annual retreat. Unbeknownst to him, he's the central figure in a meticulously crafted reality show.

Raising the Stakes with a More Elaborate Hoax

Executive producer David Bernad explains that the goal wasn't to top the first season but to create something unique. "The aspiration wasn't trying to beat or match or top Jury Duty – it was to create something that was unique and worked on its own," he says. Company Retreat elevates the concept with a more complex narrative, a larger setting, and increased production challenges.

  • The filming location spanned 300,000 square feet, ten times the size of the original courtroom.
  • Forty-eight cameras were deployed, with structures built to conceal crew and equipment.
  • Actors had to master detailed backstories to maintain consistency, as Norman's co-workers were portrayed as a close-knit group with shared history.

Navigating Unpredictability and Risk

The production faced immense pressure, as Norman's unawareness meant scenes couldn't be reshot. Executive producer Nicholas Hatton compares it to "building a Jenga tower", where any misstep could reveal the hoax. Both seasons came close to collapse, such as when a bailiff accidentally used an actor's real name in season one. Bernad notes that this risk adds to the viewer's thrill, making the outcome unpredictable.

Casting the Unsuspecting Hero

Finding the right participant was crucial. Over 10,000 applicants responded to a Craigslist ad, with casting focused on traits like kindness and empathy. Hatton emphasises that the hero is "number one on the callsheet – they just don't realise it fully". Aftercare, including a $150,000 prize, ensures a positive experience, with Szymanski framing it as throwing a surprise party for Norman.

Release Details and Future Prospects

Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat premieres on Prime Video on 20 March, with episodes released weekly through 3 April. The series continues to blend comedy with genuine human connection, proving that reality TV can still innovate and captivate audiences.
