Jessica Reynolds: From Derry Girls to Channel 4's A Woman of Substance

Jessica Reynolds, the 27-year-old Belfast-born actress, is gaining attention for her role as young Emma Harte in Channel 4's adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford's novel A Woman of Substance. The series follows Emma's journey from a Yorkshire maid to a wealthy businesswoman, with Reynolds portraying the younger version opposite Vera star Brenda Blethyn as the older Emma.

Reynolds, who stands at 5ft 1in, began her career after studying at Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. She made her theatre debut in A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast. Her breakthrough came in 2022 when she played Wee Deirdre in the third season of the hit Irish comedy Derry Girls, followed by roles as Malva Christie in Outlander and Lady Christine O'Madden in Netflix's House of Guinness.

For A Woman of Substance, Reynolds focused heavily on perfecting a Yorkshire accent, which she described as integral to understanding her character's class and background. She admitted feeling pressure portraying such an iconic character, noting Emma's resilience and stiff-upper-lip attitude, which contrasts with her own more sensitive nature.

Reynolds and Blethyn met for the first time on the moors during filming, with Blethyn recalling a misty evening where they called out 'Emma!' to each other. Reynolds is also set to appear in Channel 4's upcoming series Close to Home, based on Michael Magee's novel, playing Mairead opposite Anthony Boyle.

A Woman of Substance continues on Channel 4 on Wednesday, March 18, at 9pm.
