James Norton Dazzles At House Of Guinness Netflix Premiere

Netflix's new drama House Of Guinness, created by Peaky Blinders mastermind Steven Knight, has received a sharply divided critical response since its release on Thursday. Some reviewers have branded it 'exhausting' and 'wildly unfaithful', while others have praised it as a 'rip-roaring' family saga.

The series centres on the Guinness dynasty, with Anthony Boyle, Louis Partridge, Emily Fairn and Fionn O'Shea playing the heirs of brewing mogul Sir Benjamin Guinness. Set against the backdrop of Ireland on the brink of revolution, the story follows the siblings as they navigate family rivalries, personal demons and political turmoil.

James Norton has been singled out for praise for his performance as Sean Rafferty, a compelling fixer. However, the show's historical accuracy has been questioned. The Irish Times' Ed Power criticised the drama for a 'rudimentary understanding of Ireland's experiences of colonialism', noting that no character with a British accent appears in the eight-part series.

The Independent's Katie Rosseinsky gave a two-star review, describing the series as 'exhausting, try-hard and far too dark'. She criticised the heavy-handed use of on-screen text and the dark, sludgy visuals that make scenes difficult to see. Despite the mixed reviews, the series boasts Knight's trademark swagger and ambition.
