The 'Mind of a Serial Killer: the Experience' exhibition in New York has drawn criticism for sensationalising gruesome murders and showing little respect for victims. The immersive exhibit, which previously opened in Dublin, features crime scene recreations and psychological profiles of infamous serial killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, and John Wayne Gacy.
Visitors must sign a waiver warning of disturbing material that may cause emotional distress. One reviewer described audible gasps and feelings of nausea, not from the gory displays but from the existence of the exhibition itself. The replica of Dahmer's kitchen, complete with a fake frozen head in the refrigerator, and a bound child-size doll in a recreation of BTK killer Dennis Rader's living room were among the most criticised elements.
The exhibition is produced by Exhibition Hub, a company known for immersive events such as Bubble Planet and Titanic. Staff were noted as cheerful, with one reviewer declining a free poster and being encouraged to keep a VIP lanyard as a souvenir. The reviewer questioned the educational value, calling the exhibition sensationalistic and exploitative, and linked it to the broader true crime industry that profits from tragedy.
Tickets for the New York experience cost $28, while similar events like CrimeCon charge upwards of $399. The reviewer concluded that the exhibition represents the ugliest aspects of crime under capitalism, where even the most unspeakable acts are commodified for entertainment.
