Huw Edwards Drama Producers Defend Timing as Victim Is 'Ready to Tell His Story'

The executive producer behind Channel 5's forthcoming television drama about disgraced BBC presenter Huw Edwards has insisted that now is the "right time" for the dramatisation, revealing that the victim himself feels prepared to share his account.

Drama Tackles Urgent Themes of Online Safety and Sentencing

Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards chronicles how the former News at Ten anchor groomed a teenager, referred to pseudonymously as "Ryan" in the production, over a period of several years. Edwards ultimately pleaded guilty in 2024 to making indecent images of children, receiving a six-month suspended prison sentence and being placed on the sex offenders' register.

At a London screening event on Tuesday 17 March, executive producer Samantha Anstiss addressed criticism that the drama's release—coming just 18 months after Edwards' sentencing—might be premature. "People have talked about the timing of this drama, and I'd say the timing is really right because the victim feels it's right," Anstiss stated. "He's ready to tell his story, and there are really urgent themes in this drama around online safety, child pornography, the leniency of the sentencing."

Anstiss emphasised that many were "shocked" by the suspended sentence Edwards received, and she praised Channel 5 for its bravery in supporting the project throughout its development. "They've gone on this long journey with us. They have been totally unwavering all the way through," she said, describing the drama as "proper public service broadcasting at its finest."

Martin Clunes Portrays Disgraced Broadcaster in Challenging Role

The drama stars Martin Clunes in the lead role as Huw Edwards, with Osian Morgan playing the victim, Ryan Davies. The real-life individual consulted on the scripts, ensuring an authentic portrayal of his experiences.

Clunes recently discussed the preparation involved in taking on such a sensitive part, revealing he studied extensive archive footage of Edwards to capture his mannerisms beyond the newsreader persona. "One of the archive bits I watched was an outside broadcast. He's outside Number 10 at night in a coat, and he's just texting, waiting to go live, which I found chilling in light of what we know," Clunes told The Times, referencing a scene in the drama where Edwards texts the victim before going on air.

Anstiss acknowledged the challenges of producing the series, noting that the thought of child victims featured in the pornography Edwards possessed "held my motivation to tell the story." She added, "Child pornography is not a victimless crime."

Background: The Downfall of a BBC Star

Edwards' downfall began in July 2023 when The Sun reported allegations that a "top BBC star" had paid a teenager for sexual images. His wife subsequently identified him as the presenter in question, leading to his departure from the BBC. In June 2024, the Metropolitan Police charged him with three counts of making indecent images of children, to which he admitted possessing 41 photographs on WhatsApp, including seven of the most severe category.

Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards is scheduled to air at 9pm on Tuesday 24 March on Channel 5, promising a stark examination of power, abuse, and justice in the digital age.
