HBO has confirmed the lead cast for its upcoming Harry Potter television series, with Dominic McLaughlin set to play Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The show, which began filming on July 14, 2025, at Leavesden Studios, has already been renewed for a second season.
Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession, has been named showrunner after beating out Tom Moran and Kathleen Jordan for the role. Mark Mylod, also a Succession veteran, will direct multiple episodes and serve as executive producer. The series will adapt J.K. Rowling's seven books, with each season reportedly focusing on one novel, though HBO & Max Content CEO Casey Bloys has suggested the project could run for 10 years.
Chris Columbus, director of the first two Harry Potter films, has praised the television reboot as a 'spectacular idea.' The series was initially announced for Max in April 2023 but was later moved to HBO as part of Warner Bros. Discovery's revised streaming strategy.
Notable additions to the creative team include Oscar-winning costume designer Holly Waddington and Killing Eve writer Laura Neal. The role of Ginny Weasley will be recast for Season 2 following Gracie Cochrane's departure. John Lithgow has also been cast as Albus Dumbledore.
