Channel 4 has confirmed what will replace the current series of Grand Designs, and fans will be pleased. Tonight's concluding episode, on Wednesday, 21 October, features Kevin McCloud revisiting a past build.
Finale Details
Grand Designs teased the finale in a social media post, saying: "Back in 2017, Andrew and Margretta set out to build a radical home designed to store summer warmth in great banks of earth around the house, ready for the colder months. Six years after our last visit, we're back to find out whether this extraordinary experiment has worked."
Viewers responded positively, with one saying "Looking forward to this one," and another adding "Can't wait."
What's Next on Wednesdays
While the series draws to a close, Grand Designs enthusiasts will learn that its regular Wednesday evening slot at 9pm on Channel 4 will remain, with a repeat episode set to broadcast next week.
This follows Kevin's launch of a new Channel 4 show, as he swapped home renovations for classic cars. The six-part series Kevin McCloud's Classic Car Road Trips premiered earlier this month, seeing the host driving classic cars through their countries of origin and discovering local culture.
Kevin's New Venture
Channel 4 previously teased the series, sharing: "With echoes of the golden age of motoring – an era before budget airlines and endless grey motorways – Kevin sets out to learn about each head-turning car through the country of its origin, and about the heritage, history and unique culture of the countries through the cars."
"In each episode, Kevin is handed the keys to an iconic classic vehicle – each one a feat of timeless engineering and aesthetic excellence – to explore a different region with direct links to the model." His journey took him from Cannes to Monaco in France, across Sweden, through Italy's mediaeval hilltops, and around the Peak District, Northern Ireland and Germany.
Channel 4 went on: "En route, Kevin discovers each car's heritage and design and immerses himself in each region. He explores the local communities, culture and cuisine, takes in the stunning sites where architecture and art have defined the landscape and hears the secrets and stories from the people who live there."
Kevin remarked: "This is an exciting new venture for me. A chance to explore how classic vehicles - themselves time-space machines that connect us to our collective past - can embody and tell the stories of a place, perhaps a year, and an exciting moment. How also, by return, the spirit of a region and a people can be expressed in these engineering wonders."
"Old cars are also a joy to explore and to drive; they demand more from us and usually therefore give more back than any modern motor; they put us in spiritual contact with the generations that went before us. So it's a genuine privilege to be able to get to know some of these modern fabled creatures. And to learn from them."
Audience Response
Audiences responded enthusiastically when the programme premiered, with one viewer posting: "Kevin, I would watch you talk about potatoes if that were your chosen topic. Looking forward to this." Another commented: "A chance to watch Kevin jaunt around Europe in classic cars, count me in!" A third declared: "Looks beautiful - can't wait to watch!"
