Grace Dent's Unfiltered Reaction to MasterChef Hosting Duties
The culinary television landscape is set for a significant shake-up as the 22nd series of MasterChef prepares to launch this month. In a major departure from tradition, the iconic BBC cooking competition will now be helmed by new judges Grace Dent and Anna Haugh, marking the end of an era for long-serving hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode.
A New Chapter for the Iconic Show
BBC viewers tuning in from April 21 will witness a transformed judging panel on one of Britain's most beloved food programmes. The change comes after the network made the decision last year to part ways with Wallace and Torode, who had become synonymous with MasterChef over many successful seasons.
Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes ahead of their television debut together, 52-year-old Grace Dent offered a characteristically brutally honest perspective on assuming the prestigious hosting role. When questioned about whether she and Haugh felt apprehensive about following in the footsteps of the show's former presenters, Dent provided a revealing response that underscored her confidence in the new direction.
Dent's Confident Stance on the Transition
"I don't feel I am 'picking up' after anybody," Dent declared emphatically. "I've been going to work every day at the helm of the most important food show, probably in British television history. I think I'm doing well. Am I doing well?"
As she turned to her co-star for validation, Anna Haugh immediately confirmed that Dent was indeed excelling in her new capacity. Dent elaborated further on her forward-looking approach: "There is no way I'd show up a year ago on that set and begin to work in the manner that I did, while looking backwards."
Grace Dent brings considerable experience to her permanent judging role, having served as a regular guest judge on MasterChef over numerous years. She previously stepped in to judge Celebrity MasterChef last year following Gregg Wallace's departure from that spin-off series.
Enthusiasm for the New Partnership
Discussing her return to the culinary programme in a more substantial capacity, Dent expressed being 'over the moon' with the opportunity and praised her collaboration with Anna Haugh. "It's a joy to be working with Anna, who brings all her incredible experience to the table," she remarked. "I am in for such a treat with this series, I can't wait to get started."
Anna Haugh represents another familiar face to MasterChef enthusiasts, having made several appearances on Celebrity MasterChef in previous seasons. She notably served as a judge during the final week of last year's competition series.
Haugh's Perspective on the New Role
Expressing her own delight at becoming a full-time member of the MasterChef team, Haugh shared: "I'm delighted to be back on MasterChef and judging alongside the wonderful Grace Dent, whose writing and wit I've admired for years."
She continued with genuine enthusiasm about the programme's cultural impact: "MasterChef has long inspired and resonated with cooks in home kitchens and, of course, in my industry. I can't wait to get into the studio for what will be a great competition."
The revamped MasterChef makes its highly anticipated return to television screens on Tuesday April 21 at 9pm, broadcasting simultaneously on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer streaming platform. This new chapter promises to bring fresh energy and perspectives to the culinary competition that has captivated British audiences for over two decades.
