From Drag Queens to Nuns: How Global Hosts Reinvent The Traitors' Iconic Look
Global Hosts Reinvent The Traitors' Iconic Style

The BBC's hit reality show The Traitors is as famous for its host's distinctive style as for its tense gameplay. Claudia Winkleman's autumnal tartan, fingerless gloves, and heavy fringe have become iconic. Yet, as the format has exploded worldwide with over 30 versions, a fascinating array of hosts – from drag queens to Catholic nuns – have made the presenter's cape uniquely their own.

A Global Cast of Characters in the Cape

In the United States, the role is taken by suave Scottish actor Alan Cumming, 60. He channels an imperious Bond villain, often wearing a kilt, and brings a gothic, camp sensibility to his role as ringmaster. His notable contestants have included former Commons Speaker John Bercow and Love Island stars Maura Higgins and Ekin-Su Culculoglu.

Over in Ireland, viewers will recognise the host as Siobhan McSweeney, 46, famed for playing Sister George Michael in Derry Girls. Presenting from the bleakly imposing Slane Castle, she opts for gothic glamour, quipping that 'you can't wear jeans and a nice top in a castle'.

Unexpected Hosts and Real-World Tragedy

Finland's approach is particularly unique. The host there is actor and comedian Christoffer Strandberg, 36, who presents the show as himself. His Instagram, however, reveals a convincing alter-ego as Marilyn Monroe. The Finnish version, Petolloiset, was tragically linked to a real-life murder in October 2024, when contestant and ex-ice hockey player Janne Puhakka, 29, was shot. The final episode paid tribute to him with a video montage.

After a ratings slump, The Traitors Australia is hoping for a comeback by switching hosts. Glamorous presenter Gretel Killeen, 62, known for hosting Big Brother, has taken over from actor Rodger Corser, 52.

New Directions and Celebrity Line-Ups

In New Zealand, the first two seasons were fronted by gruff broadcaster Paul Henry, who presented more like a Mob boss in a black fedora than a cape-wearing host. For the third series, he hands over to comic Madeleine Sami, 45, beloved host of The Great Kiwi Bake Off.

Germany's version, Die Varrater, is steered by former Lufthansa first officer Sonja Zietlow, 57. Like the American edition, it features an all-celebrity cast; its third season included Strictly Come Dancing judge Motsi Mabuse, 44.

This global tour reveals that while the core mechanics of deception and betrayal remain constant, the host's persona – and their interpretation of that symbolic cape – is a key ingredient in adapting The Traitors for local audiences, proving the show's versatility and enduring appeal.
