Popstar Wang Leehom was left shocked when a glitching robot backing dancer lost its balance and stumbled right into him during a packed concert in Chengdu, China. The metal mover malfunctioned at a show by the American singer-actor, leaving the crowd in hysterics.
Robot Malfunction During Live Performance
Footage shows the moment the robot raised its arms next to Wang and another humanoid dancer at the end of a song. The little robot then glitched and stumbled towards the unsuspecting singer, bumping into his legs. As the audience erupted in laughter, the 50-year-old smiled and helped the bot back into position, asking it: "Are you okay?" He reminded his metallic dancer: "We have one more song to do."
Humanoid robots had been wowing fans with slick dance routines during the fiery track 'Fire Power Full On' as part of Wang's The Best Place II tour. The mishap took place at the Dong'an Lake Sports Park Main Stadium in Chengdu on 5 July.
Previous Stage Accident at Same Venue
Ironically, Wang suffered another stage blunder at the same venue the night before. In front of 40,000 fans, the singer tripped and whacked his head on the stage, as reported by Creatorzine. Wang, born in New York to a Taiwanese American family, was taken to hospital where he needed 27 stitches to his left ear and 12 to his face. The pop star tripped over a safety cable while stepping off a descending platform, falling forwards and hitting his head on the steps of a platform that spanned into the crowd. The left side of his face took the full impact, shattering the cartilage in the outer ear.
With blood splattered across his left face and ear, the singer immediately stood up and finished the song. Wang joked on stage that he looked a bit like Van Gogh or an MMA fighter. After the concert, he went straight to hospital for further treatment.
Wang Leehom's Reaction
Wang later said: "When you're performing live in front of 40,000 fans, you don't feel the pain. The blood looked frightening, but there were no more serious injuries." He added: "I feel incredibly lucky and blessed that it wasn't any worse."
