HBO's upcoming 'Game of Thrones' prequel, 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight', has been pushed back to a 2026 release, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. The series, based on George R.R. Martin's novella 'The Hedge Knight', was previously expected to air by the end of 2025.
The delay was announced during WBD's upfront presentation at Madison Square Garden, where a first-look trailer ended with a '2026' title card. HBO content chairman Casey Bloys confirmed the show will premiere in 'winter', suggesting an early 2026 debut.
Set roughly 100 years before 'Game of Thrones' and 100 years after 'House of the Dragon', the series follows Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). Their journey takes them to a tournament where they encounter Targaryen princes and other characters.
The six-episode first season is written by Martin and Ira Parker, with Sarah Adina Smith directing three episodes and Owen Harris directing the other three. The logline describes the series as a tale of 'two unlikely heroes' in an age when the Targaryens still hold the Iron Throne.
No premiere window has been announced for 'House of the Dragon' season three, which is currently in production and confirmed as the penultimate season.
