Emmerdale's Belle terror as Tom King's early release confirmed

Belle Dingle is left devastated and terrified in Emmerdale when she learns that her abusive ex-husband Tom King is being released early from his three-year prison sentence for assault and coercive and controlling behaviour.

Since Tom nearly destroyed her life with his abuse, Belle has been working hard to rebuild. Her business is back on track and her relationship with Kammy Hadiq is going well — the perfect moment for Tom to return and threaten it all.

Victim Liaison Officer delivers the news

Belle's world collapses when a Victim Liaison Officer arrives to deliver the bad news that Tom will be released soon. Although Belle is somewhat reassured that he legally cannot come anywhere near her, Kammy is not convinced that she is okay.

Matters are made worse when the local vicar, Charles Anderson, overhears Belle talking with Tom's aunt Nicola King about the situation. Charles, who has been acting as prison chaplain, steps in to say Tom is a changed man after forgiveness, hinting that Tom is keen to see Belle again. Belle feels disgusted that Tom is already trying to worm his way back in through the vicar.

Rhona's dark warning

Belle considers confronting Tom face to face, but Cain Dingle and Kammy talk her down. She is terrified that Tom will come and find her anyway, as he has done before at the Homestead.

Rhona Goskirk comes to her rescue, sharing her own experiences with Pierce, which helps Belle see that she has not lost her control at all. But Rhona secretly warns Cain that if Tom comes back, he will be more dangerous than ever — her reassurances to Belle were just platitudes.

Kammy declares his love

Overwhelmed by his protective feelings, Kammy blurts out that he loves Belle. Stunned, Belle runs away, unable to cope with this new set of emotions.

Producer Laura Shaw has confirmed dark times ahead for Belle, saying the storyline will be 'reigniting a complex and challenging story'. She added: 'When Belle gets the news that Tom is up for parole she's forced to confront a trauma she battled hard to overcome. With her family and new partner Kammy by her side, we explore the lasting impact of Tom's abusive actions on Belle as she fights to keep Tom away from the village.'

James Chase, who plays Tom, said: 'Stepping back into Tom's shoes is a responsibility I don't take lightly. He is a character driven by obsession and a desperate need for control, and it is both fascinating and challenging to step back into that mindset. The audience knows exactly who he is and what he is capable of, so the challenge now is to show the lengths he is willing to go to in order to get what he wants, even if it means dismantling Belle's life all over again. It's a dark path, and I'm ready to see how far Tom will push it.'
