EastEnders is preparing to deliver its most dramatic Christmas yet, with the confirmed return of Sam Mitchell to Albert Square in a storyline guaranteed to send shockwaves through Walford.
A Ghost from the Past Returns
Sam Mitchell, played by Kim Medcalf, will come face-to-face with her former murder accomplice Zoe Slater, portrayed by Michelle Ryan, in what promises to be an explosive festive confrontation. The two women haven't seen each other for over two decades, since the events surrounding the death of Den Watts.
While Zoe has undoubtedly faced difficult times since fleeing Walford, she has never accepted responsibility for her role in Den's murder, for which Sam initially took the blame. This long-buried history is set to resurface with dramatic consequences.
Unfinished Business and Ulterior Motives
As these former partners-in-crime meet for the first time in 20 years, viewers will be left wondering whether they can put their troubled past behind them, or if Sam has returned with revenge on her mind.
Given Sam's previous behaviour in the Square, she's unlikely to receive a warm welcome from her family. However, a troubling situation is causing concern for the estranged Mitchell sister, making it clear that Sam needs her family's support now more than ever.
Actress Kim Medcalf expressed her excitement about returning: "It's such a joy to be asked to come back to EastEnders, especially as it's the festive period and you know there will always be plenty of fireworks."
"I love the character of Sam, she always causes drama wherever she goes, but she also has that vulnerable side too, which is great to play. It's also lovely being back on set with the fantastic cast and to see old friends and new faces."
Behind the Infamous Murder
The history between these women traces back to one of EastEnders' most memorable moments. Dirty Den was bludgeoned to death in self-defence during the show's special 20th anniversary episode, a scene that attracted a staggering 14.34 million viewers, representing almost 60% of possible audience share.
The murder cover-up involved Sam, Zoe, and Chrissie Watts, who buried Den beneath the floor of The Vic's barrel store. Chrissie managed to evade detection for months, even living with Den's adoptive daughter Sharon Watts and his son Dennis Rickman.
The truth eventually emerged when Sam drunkenly dug up the body, leading to her being held responsible for the murder until her brothers Phil and Grant Mitchell returned to help their sister and uncovered the truth, resulting in Chrissie being sent to prison.
Executive Producer Ben Wadey added: "I'm delighted to welcome Kim Medcalf back to EastEnders for a short stint later this year. It's no secret that wherever Sam Mitchell goes, drama inevitably follows, and with ex-accomplice Zoe Slater back in the Square, only time will tell if there is space for forgiveness between the pair, or whether battle lines will be drawn."
Fans have already expressed their excitement on social media, with comments including "The queen is back" and "My jaw dropped" following the announcement, setting the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable Christmas in Albert Square.
