EastEnders aired a standalone episode focusing on Kat and Alfie Moon as their marriage hangs in the balance. In recent episodes of the BBC soap, Kat (Jessie Wallace) has been overwhelmed by grief following the sudden death of her daughter Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) and has been diverting her anger towards her family.
Kat's downward spiral
On Wednesday (October 14), she continued to drink heavily and acted erratically as her loved ones failed to get through to her. Kat also wrote a list of potential ways to ease her pain, including 'drink, cruelty, violence, run away', but the fifth point was purposely left blank as fears grew for her safety with Zoe yet to be laid to rest.
During Thursday's standalone episode, Alfie (Shane Richie) raged at his frantic wife Kat for pulling their family apart as he struggled to keep them together. As the two argued, Kat told Alfie that she didn't want to be with him anymore and coldly removed her wedding ring, and when Alfie took off his ring in response, Kat walked out of the pub.
Alfie's encounter
Kat travelled to Epping Forest where she was seen surrounded by darkness, and as rain poured down over her, she screamed for her daughter. Back at The Vic, Alfie exploded with rage when he was goaded by one of the men Kat was entertaining.
In the barrel store, Alfie told Phil (Steve McFadden) that he had reached his limit with Kat and had decided to leave. He secretly packed a bag and broke down in tears as he looked in on the three sleeping boys.
Alfie headed towards Walford East tube station and came across a homeless man who had pitched down next to the railway bridge. The man, whose name hasn't been confirmed, is seen lying on the floor, holding a cigarette in one hand. "Oi, it's not a good night to be out, fella, so I tell you what, get yourself a room," Alfie tells him before handing over some money.
Who plays the homeless man?
"Cheers, fella," the man gently replies before Alfie hands him his mobile phone. "While I'm at it, you may as well have that; you might get a few quid," Alfie adds before heading into the station.
"Mister, do you need to take this?" the homeless guy called out, as Alfie answered the phone call from semi-conscious Kat, who told him that the fifth point on her list of coping mechanisms had just come to her.
Scared that she was going to harm herself, Alfie tracked Kat's location on her phone and drove Charlie's cab to Epping Forest, and eventually found his wife collapsed in the woods, before taking her to safety.
EastEnders welcomed Netflix star James Payton as the struggling man in Kat and Alfie's special episode. The 50-year-old actor has enjoyed various roles in Netflix productions including The Diplomat (2024), Wednesday (2025), Glass Onion (2022), The Crown (2023), and The Gentleman (2026).
James has also starred as Lawson Jaggers in Prime Video's Young Sherlock, Goon Tyler in Apple TV's Silo, and Gabriel in the Hulu series Wedding Season. Harry Potter fans will know James as Frank Longbottom in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), and as Adolf Hitler in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).
