Penny Smith Returns to Daytime TV with BBC Morning Live Role

Daytime television legend Penny Smith has made a triumphant return to the small screen, 16 years after leaving GMTV. The 67-year-old presenter appeared as a roving reporter on BBC's Morning Live on Friday, May 29, delighting fans who had missed her presence on daytime TV.

Smith, best known for her role as main newsreader on GMTV from April 1993 to June 2010, investigated the chaos caused by the EU's new fingerprint scanner at Manchester Airport. She spoke to travellers affected by the delays and tested how different substances, such as water and moisturiser, affected the scanner's results.

Viewers took to social media to express their joy at seeing Smith back on screen. One fan wrote: 'Can we please see more of Penny Smith on Morning Live?' while another said: 'Great to see Penny Smith back on TV'. The segment was hosted by Gethin Jones and Michelle Ackerley.

Smith began her career as a reporter on the Peterborough Evening Telegraph in 1977, later helping launch Sky News in 1989. She joined GMTV in 1993 and remained there until 2010, working alongside stars like Eamonn Holmes and Lorraine Kelly. Last year, she reunited with Holmes on GB News, where he said: 'I’m delighted to be working with Penny again after all these years.'

Morning Live airs on BBC One weekdays at 9.30am and is available on BBC iPlayer.
