Fans of Call the Midwife looking for another medical drama to binge-watch can stream the complete series of Doc Martin for free on ITVX. The popular ITV show, starring Martin Clunes, has not been broadcast since its 2022 Christmas Special, which concluded an 18-year run, but all episodes remain available to watch.
What Is Doc Martin About?
The medical comedy-drama spans 10 seasons and follows Dr. Martin Ellingham, a brilliant London surgeon played by Martin Clunes, who develops a severe phobia of blood. Forced to leave his surgical career, he moves to the sleepy seaside village of Portwenn in Cornwall, where he spent his childhood holidays, and works as a local general practitioner.
Despite his exceptional diagnostic skills, Martin is socially awkward, abrasive, and completely lacks a polite bedside manner. The eccentric local townspeople are anything but welcoming to the doctor's bluntness and rigid demeanor. The show also follows his evolving romance and marriage to local schoolteacher Louisa Glasson, played by Caroline Catz, and their blossoming family.
Critical and Fan Reception
Doc Martin has gained legions of fans over the years and is currently rated 95 percent on the Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes. One fan wrote: "This programme gets better and better! I am loving it, the second time around." Another stated: "I love this show. I can never get enough of it," while a third added: "I love it!!! Great story, various characters, and fabulous landscape!!!"
One viewer explained: "This show strikes a nice balance between humor and drama with its blend of quirky characters and medical intrigue set against the picturesque setting of Cornwall." Another added: "Doc Martin is sweet, stirring, and completely addictive. Perhaps it's the gorgeous scenery, perhaps it's the magnificent acting, or could it be the ugly mugs that make it so irresistible?"
Where to Stream
The entire Doc Martin series is available on ITVX, while Call the Midwife can be streamed on BBC iPlayer. Call the Midwife series 15 concluded earlier this year with a poignant finale that saw the death of Sister Monica Joan, played by Judy Parfitt, and left the future of Nonnatus House unknown. The BBC period drama is set to return this Christmas with a prequel series titled Sisters in Arms, set during the London Blitz, and a film adaptation is also on the horizon before the programme returns with season 16.
