Death Valley Season 3: Timothy Spall and Paul Doolan Discuss Future
Death Valley Season 3: Spall and Doolan on Show's Future

Death Valley season two concludes on Sunday evening (June 21), marking the end of another gripping six-part season. The latest chapter kicked off with Janie Mallowan (Gwyneth Keyworth) at loggerheads with John Chapel (Timothy Spall) after she discovered that her former TV idol-turned-crime-solving partner is dating her own mother, Yvonne (Melanie Walters). Throughout the BBC series, the unlikely duo has been forced to overcome both professional and private obstacles, including the arrival of Janie's estranged dad, Michael (Owen Teale). With its blend of comedy and gripping 'whodunnits', fans of the cozy Welsh crime drama will be wondering if the show is returning for season three.

Cast and Creator Weigh In on Season 3 Prospects

Speaking to Express.co.uk, lead actor Timothy Spall shared his hopes for another season of Death Valley but acknowledged the high level of competition, while writer Paul Doolan revealed he is unsure whether the show will return, as it hasn't yet been commissioned for more episodes.

Paul explained: "We don’t actually know yet. I’m not sure what we’re allowed to say. But hopefully, definitely want to kill more people, so let’s hope so."

Timothy added, "I mean, we don’t know. This is the nature of the thing. Unfortunately, the BBC, you know as we know, in the modern world, it’s going to have to find its feet. It’s got to sustain itself in this massively competitive world it is in now. It’s got to cater for so many people because it is a public broadcasting service. But they can’t guarantee it all the time because they’ve got so many things to think about. You have got to see how it goes down, so I don’t know."

Creative Team Ready for More Episodes

Timothy concluded, "We don’t know, we’re sort of talking about it, aren’t we. But we want to be sort of preparing for the possibility of it, but we don’t know."

Paul added, "What’s been really nice about doing a second series is you realise you’re not bored of the characters, and you have not run out of story ideas, because that’s the constant fear, but it feels like there is plenty more fuel left in it. So I’d love to write more, but it is like you say, it’s the BBC. They have a duty to make sure they’re recommissioning things that lots of people are watching."

Death Valley is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
