Sir David Attenborough is set to return to the BBC's beloved natural history series Planet Earth for its third season, 17 years after he first hosted the show in 2006. The 97-year-old broadcaster will present the new eight-part series, which is expected to air on BBC One this autumn.
Filming for Planet Earth III began five years ago when the series was commissioned in 2019, but production was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Sir David has already recorded his introductory scenes and narration, with executive producer Mike Gunton confirming his involvement was essential. 'Planet Earth wouldn’t be Planet Earth without David,' Gunton told the Daily Mirror.
The opening segment was filmed in the British countryside, in a location where Charles Darwin used to walk while contemplating evolution. The series will conclude with a special episode celebrating individuals dedicated to saving endangered species.
In addition to Planet Earth III, Sir David will present a new three-part series for Sky called Secret World of Sound, which explores animal sounds using cutting-edge recording technology.
