Ex-Coronation Street Villain Emrhys Cooper Lands New Hallmark Rom-Com Role
Corrie's Emrhys Cooper Announces New Hallmark Film Role

An actor best known for playing a sinister cult leader on Coronation Street has announced his next move into the world of romantic comedy. Emrhys Cooper, who portrayed the manipulative Rowan Cunliffe on the ITV soap, is set to appear in an upcoming Hallmark Channel film.

From Weatherfield to Hallmark

The 40-year-old actor shared the news on his Instagram story, posting the artwork for the new movie titled Caught by Love. The film stars 90s icon Rachael Leigh Cook (She's All That) and Luke Macfarlane (Brothers & Sisters) in the lead roles. Cooper expressed his excitement in the caption, writing: "Come take a trip with us. So excited to share Caught by Love, coming soon to @hallmarkchannel." He praised the "incredibly talented leads" and stated he was "grateful to be part of this fun adventure."

Cooper joined the cast of Coronation Street in 2024, with his character Rowan weaving a complex and disturbing storyline. Rowan manipulated Leanne Battersby, played by Jane Danson, into joining his organisation, The Institute. The villain's reign on the cobbles concluded in December 2024 when he was finally brought to justice and written out of the show.

Real-Life Inspiration for Soap Villainy

In a poignant twist, Cooper previously revealed that his portrayal of the cult leader was informed by his own family's experiences. He explained that his parents were drawn into a London-based cult two decades ago, which initially presented itself as a wellness and fitness group. "I've consulted with my dad on this character as he has a lot of insight," Cooper told The Mirror. He described the process as "quite healing," helping to address past resentment and unanswered questions.

The actor emphasised that he hoped his Coronation Street storyline would raise awareness about how cults truly operate, warning that they are often not what people expect. "Take it very seriously, it's not a joke, some people join cults and never come out," he cautioned.

Looking to the Future

Prior to his soap exit, a source indicated that Rowan's departure was always part of a planned story arc, noting the character would become "even worse" before leaving. Cooper's career beyond the Street includes roles in the horror film Dreamcatcher and the comedy-drama The Shuroo Process, which he also co-wrote and directed. His new role in Caught by Love marks a significant genre shift from the dark drama of Weatherfield to the lighter, romantic fare of the Hallmark Channel, showcasing his versatility as a performer.
