Martin Clunes Portrays Sinister Huw Edwards in New Channel 5 Drama Trailer
Clunes as Edwards in Channel 5 Drama Trailer

Channel 5 has unveiled a compelling and intense new trailer for its upcoming drama, Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards, featuring Martin Clunes in a chilling portrayal of the former BBC newsreader convicted of serious child sexual offences. The trailer provides a stark glimpse into the double life of a man once regarded as a national treasure, now exposed for his criminal actions.

A Glimpse into the Darker Persona

The hard-hitting preview, released just weeks before the drama airs, delves into the fall from grace of ex-BBC presenter Huw Edwards. It showcases previously unseen footage, including a first look at Osian Morgan playing the victim character 'Ryan.' The trailer opens with Clunes embodying Edwards' polished professional image on television, announcing the start of a bulletin with the line, "Good evening, tonight at 10."

Contrasting Scenes Reveal Deception

The footage then transitions to scenes of Edwards outdoors, wearing a baseball cap while messaging 'Ryan,' who is heard saying, "There's a man who gives us money." Returning to the television studio, a colleague tells Edwards, "Britain has spoken, you are the voice of the nation," highlighting his public persona. Yet, beneath this veneer, he actively messages the young man, who asks, "What would you like to talk about?" to which Edwards replies, "Nothing, show me something instead."

Synopsis and Real-Life Events

The feature-length production examines Edwards' double life as it spirals into chaos, culminating in his complete withdrawal from public life following his conviction. In September 2022, Edwards stood as one of Britain's most trusted newsreaders, delivering the historic announcement of Queen Elizabeth II's death to millions. However, by July 2023, he was suspended following allegations of sexual misconduct.

While South Wales Police and the Metropolitan Police found no evidence of criminal conduct initially, Edwards was admitted to hospital and stepped down in April 2024. Three months later, authorities charged him with three counts of creating indecent images of children, involving a child as young as seven, and obtaining 41 illegal images from a convicted paedophile via WhatsApp. After pleading guilty, Edwards, now 64, received a six-month suspended prison sentence and was added to the sex offenders' register.

Channel 5's Perspective

Ben Frow, chief content officer at Channel 5, stated, "This is an important and shocking story of how a man in a position of power and trust betrayed that status. By gaining exclusive access to the key individuals involved and those who investigated the story, we explore the human cost behind the headlines. As a close collaboration between 5's factual and scripted teams, this is a first for the channel."

Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards is scheduled to air on Tuesday, March 24 at 9pm on Channel 5, offering a dramatic retelling of a scandal that captivated the nation.
