Britain's Got Talent has been abruptly removed from television screens this weekend due to a significant ITV schedule reshuffle, a move that is likely to provoke frustration among dedicated viewers. The long-running talent competition, currently in its nineteenth series, has broadcast three consecutive weeks of auditions, but fans must now endure an unexpected hiatus.
Sports Coverage Takes Priority
The popular show has been displaced this Saturday to accommodate live Six Nations rugby coverage, featuring a crucial match between France and England. This sporting fixture will commence at 7:20 PM on ITV1, with kick-off scheduled for 8:10 PM, precisely when Britain's Got Talent would typically air. Consequently, the next episode of the talent show will not appear until Saturday, March 21.
Contrasting Fortunes for BGT
This scheduling change occurs against a backdrop of mixed fortunes for the programme. Recently, Britain's Got Talent secured a substantial £120 million deal with ITV, ensuring its continuation until 2028. However, this renewal comes despite a notable decline in traditional viewing figures.
After nearly two decades on air, the show's recent launch attracted just 3 million viewers, marking its lowest-ever audience. This represents a dramatic fall from its peak, when it drew an impressive 10 million viewers. The second episode suffered further, with an additional 100,000 viewers tuning out.
Strategic Confidence in the Franchise
Nevertheless, producers remain confident in the show's future. Simon Cowell and production partners at Fremantle have signed a new contract that will carry Britain's Got Talent past its twentieth anniversary next year. This agreement includes plans for another Champions special, where top acts from the global Got Talent franchise will compete.
A source commented on the situation, stating, "This is a huge vote of confidence in the show, which celebrated the best week of overnight ratings for this series at the weekend. It also proved TV executives are looking beyond traditional viewing figures when making strategic decisions."
The source further explained, "Shows like Strictly have seen live viewing figures decline in recent years. They haven't seen that compensated by viewers switching to other ways of watching, whereas BGT's figures for streaming and on platforms such as YouTube have gone through the roof."
Recent Ratings Competition
Earlier this month, Britain's Got Talent was outperformed in the ratings by BBC's Michael McIntyre's Big Show, which attracted 3.5 million viewers, while Gladiators drew 3 million. A BGT spokesperson highlighted alternative metrics, noting, "By Sunday morning, contestant content from the episode had generated 14.5 million views with 7.8 million coming from contestant Rafferty Coope alone."
Notable Contestant Return
In recent episodes, a familiar face returned to the Britain's Got Talent stage. Katherine O'Malley, who first auditioned in 2018 alongside her husband, made her fourth appearance on the show, six years after reaching the semi-finals. This time, she performed solo after judges suggested she pursue an independent path.
Dressed as a witch with green face paint, Katherine initially puzzled the panel before revealing her identity. After sharing montages of her previous auditions, she delivered a powerful rendition of "Defying Gravity" from Wicked. The performance earned three yes votes from judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, and newcomer KSI, securing her place in the next round.
Britain's Got Talent continues to air on ITV1 and is available for streaming on ITVX, despite this weekend's temporary replacement by Six Nations rugby coverage.
