Balamory Returns After 20 Years as Star Admits 'We Never Expected It'
The cherished children's television programme Balamory is staging a remarkable and unforeseen return to CBeebies, more than two decades following its original broadcast. This revival will reintroduce beloved characters to a fresh audience while incorporating new faces into the vibrant community. Star Julie Wilson Nimmo, who portrays nursery school teacher Miss Hoolie, confessed that she "never expected" to step back into her iconic role, highlighting the cast's collective astonishment at the show's resurgence.
Original Cast Expresses Delight and Disbelief
Julie Wilson Nimmo, aged 53, shared her exhilaration during an appearance on BBC Breakfast, describing the opportunity to return to a series she "loved so much" as a rare privilege. She recounted how co-star Andrew Agnew, known as the amiable police officer PC Plum, initially believed she was "winding him up" when informed of the comeback. Nimmo emphasised the enduring friendships among the original cast, noting that many have remained close over the years.
Andrew Agnew, 49, mirrored Nimmo's enthusiasm, labelling the revival as "really exciting". He revealed that even after learning about the show's return, the cast was uncertain about their involvement. Agnew expressed particular joy at the prospect of children experiencing the programme, stating, "Getting the police uniform back on again, and the fact that kids were going to get to see it – that was the main thing."
New Characters Inject Fresh Energy into Beloved Series
The revamped Balamory will not only feature familiar personalities but also introduce new characters to enrich the narrative. Among these additions is Danielle Jam, who assumes the role of Ava Potts, the daughter of Archie the inventor from the original series. Jam, a self-professed fan of the show, described her involvement as a "pinch-me moment", expressing honour at joining a world that held special significance during her childhood.
Nimmo praised the integration of new cast members, observing that they have "added such a lovely new energy to (the show), and the kids are so excited when we’ve been filming with them all as well." She reflected on the programme's enduring appeal, likening it to a "big, warm blanket" that offers innocence and laughter, qualities she values as a parent.
Revival Details and Broadcast Information
The BBC previously commemorated Balamory's 20th anniversary in 2022 by making episodes available on BBC iPlayer. The current revival will consist of two new series, each comprising ten episodes. The inaugural episode is set to premiere on CBeebies and BBC iPlayer from 5pm on Monday, marking a significant moment for both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers.
This unexpected return underscores the lasting impact of Balamory, a programme that continues to resonate with audiences through its wholesome storytelling and memorable characters. The combination of original stars and fresh talent promises to deliver a nostalgic yet revitalised experience for all ages.
