The cast and crew of Apple TV+'s 'Bad Sisters' have opened up about the dramatic Season 2 finale, which ends with a literal cliffhanger. In the episode titled 'Cliff Hanger,' the Garvey sisters face a moral dilemma after abusive conman Ian (Owen McDonnell) is seemingly killed by Angelica (Fiona Shaw), only to survive a fall off a cliff. The sisters ultimately decide to call an ambulance, mirroring the Season 1 finale where Grace survived while her abusive husband died.
Showrunner Sharon Horgan explained the decision to revisit similar themes: 'The idea of “Can lightning strike twice?” was the first idea, because women who’ve been in that situation — have been in an abusive relationship — they don’t necessarily walk into a healthy one.' She added that the writers wanted to show the lasting trauma from Grace's first marriage, noting that 'just because he’s dead doesn’t mean that the pain goes away.'
Director Dearbhla Walsh emphasised the challenge of not simply repeating the first season's villain: 'That was such a shock, the success of The Prick in TV terms... not wanting to just say “Here’s Prick, Generation 2.”' Actor Anne-Marie Duff, who plays Grace, reflected on the tragic inevitability of her character's choices, saying 'a lot of women and men who find themselves in unhealthy love relationships are repeat offenders until they work out why they’re doing it.'
The cast also shared behind-the-scenes details about filming on a real cliff edge. Horgan recalled: 'We were right up [to the edge], but we all had harnesses. Terrifying.' Greene added that the weather was chaotic, with rain soaking the crew, but Walsh insisted on authenticity: 'It was a real cliff, it’s not CGI.'
Regarding Season 3, Horgan hinted that plans are already being discussed, though no official confirmation has been made. The finale leaves Ian's fate uncertain, with Horgan teasing that the sisters' choice to save him could have lasting consequences.
