Emotional Moment on Strictly as Judge Comments Spark Tears
An emotional scene unfolded during Saturday's live episode of Strictly Come Dancing when actress Alex Kingston broke down in tears following critical feedback from the judging panel. The Doctor Who star became visibly upset after all four judges commented that her latest performance lacked her usual confidence and sparkle.
Judges Unimpressed by Performance
The panel delivered unanimous criticism of Kingston's routine, with Craig Revel Horwood remarking it "lacked showbiz pizzazz" while Anton Du Beke noted she appeared "nervous" throughout the dance. Shirley Ballas observed the performance "lacked spatial awareness and fire" and Motsi Mabuse commented that it was the first time she had detected insecurity from the actress.
As Kingston made her way to the presenter's area, she appeared deeply disappointed, letting out an audible groan that prompted host Claudia Winkleman to immediately offer support. Winkleman revealed that Kingston had already expressed concerns about her performance before the live show began.
Claudia's Heartwarming Intervention
In a touching moment broadcast to millions, Winkleman held Kingston's hand and comforted the distressed contestant. "I don't want you to be sad because you were excellent," Winkleman reassured her. It was then that Kingston revealed a significant challenge affecting her performance: "The thing is I'm numerically dyslexic so I can't count and that's quite difficult."
As Kingston began to cry, Winkleman quickly called for everyone nearby to gather around and hug the emotional actress. While being embraced by her co-stars who repeatedly told her they loved her, Winkleman added: "And you know what? The other thing is you're not supposed to love every dance."
Kingston further explained her struggle, noting: "I'm used to dancing to lyrics." Winkleman completed her thought: "And when the lyrics have gone..." to which Kingston responded: "I didn't know I can't do that. It's fine, it's fine."
Viewer Reaction and Show Developments
Viewers took to social media to express their sympathy for the emotional actress. One fan wrote: "Alex crying absolutely broke my heart," while another commented: "Don't like seeing Alex so upset." Many praised Winkleman's handling of the situation, with one viewer noting: "Claudia really is the perfect presenter and her moment comforting Alex demonstrates this so clearly."
The emotional incident occurred as the show prepares for several major events. On November 16, dance group Diversity will make their Strictly debut during the results programme. The performance will feature 14 members of the group, including Perri Kiely and brothers Ashley and Jordan Banjo, dancing to Raye's Where Is My Husband? alongside five of the show's female professional dancers.
Meanwhile, judge Shirley Ballas has reached out to recently eliminated contestant Ellie Goldstein, praising the actress and model's "breathtaking" musicality and "spectacular" power and energy during her six weeks on the competition.
Strictly Come Dancing continues with its annual Blackpool Special airing on Saturday, November 22 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
