Actress Aimee Lou Wood is embarking on a dramatic career transformation, having been cast as the iconic literary heroine Jane Eyre in a forthcoming period drama adaptation. This role represents a significant departure from her previous high-profile performances in the Netflix teen comedy Sex Education and the HBO anthology series The White Lotus.
From Modern Comedies to Classic Literature
The 32-year-old actress, who hails from Manchester, has established herself through several notable roles but now takes on one of literature's most enduring characters. Charlotte Brontë's 1847 novel follows the emotional and moral development of protagonist Jane as she navigates complex themes of love, social equality, and personal independence within the constraints of 19th-century society.
A Prestigious Production Team
According to industry publication Deadline, this new adaptation is being developed with considerable creative pedigree. The screenplay is being written by Miriam Battye, with production handled by the renowned Working Title Films, known for numerous critically acclaimed period dramas and literary adaptations.
Rising to Prominence
Aimee Lou Wood first gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Aimee Gibbs in Netflix's hit series Sex Education, which aired from 2019 to 2023. Throughout the show's entire run, she played the character who formed a significant friendship with Maeve Wiley, portrayed by Emma Mackey. The ensemble cast also included Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, and Ncuti Gatwa.
Her career reached new heights last year with a starring role in the third season of HBO's critically acclaimed drama The White Lotus. In the Thailand-set installment, she played Chelsea, a bubbly resort guest whose storyline intertwined with that of her boyfriend Rick, portrayed by Walton Goggins. The season featured an impressive ensemble including Jason Isaacs, Parker Posey, and Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Additional Television Work
Beyond these major roles, Wood has demonstrated her versatility in other projects including the BBC comedy Daddy Issues, where she played Gemma opposite David Morrissey as her on-screen father Malcolm. This range of performances across different genres has prepared her for the demanding role of Jane Eyre.
Behind the Scenes of The White Lotus
Interestingly, Wood recently revealed that her White Lotus character Chelsea was originally conceived quite differently. Series creator Mike White had initially envisioned the character as American, and the casting process was notably intuitive.
"Well I think they've been looking for Chelsea for a while. And Mike's very instinctive with his casting. He kind of just is all intuition. We don't do chemistry tests. Like me and Walton had never met," she explained in a recent interview.
She added that other cast members including those playing Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan), Kate (Leslie Bibb), and Laurie (Carrie Coon) had also never met before filming began. "It's all just he trusts that it's going to work. And so they hadn't found Chelsea yet. And I think everyone was doing the American accent," Wood revealed.
The Accent That Made the Difference
The actress described how the character evolved during the casting process: "Talking about astrology as an American, it starts to feel quite L.A., and it was, like, scorpio. And then, they were like, do one American but do one in her own voice."
Wood continued: "And I think there was something about it made it slightly more off-center and maybe a bit more individual when it was in a Manchester accent." This decision to use her natural accent ultimately gave the character a distinctive quality that set her apart from other roles.
This background in both comedic and dramatic roles, combined with her experience navigating character evolution during the creative process, positions Wood uniquely for her upcoming portrayal of Jane Eyre. The adaptation promises to bring a fresh interpretation to Brontë's classic novel while showcasing Wood's expanding range as an actress.
