Netflix users are praising a new true-crime documentary, The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson, which has been hailed as a sensitive portrayal of a tragic case. The film, released earlier this month, focuses on the life and death of professional cyclist Moriah Wilson, who was fatally shot in Austin, Texas, in May 2022 at the age of 25.
The documentary, directed by Marina Zenovich and produced by Evan Hayes, traces the investigation and trial that followed Wilson's death. Police focused on Kaitlin Armstrong, the on-off girlfriend of cycling pro Colin Strickland, after uncovering a pattern of jealousy over Wilson's relationship with Strickland. Armstrong was later convicted of murder and sentenced to 90 years in prison.
Unlike some true-crime documentaries that have faced criticism for sensationalising murders, this film has been commended for its respectful approach. Viewers have described it as “essential viewing,” particularly within the cycling community. One viewer said: “I’m so glad they finally did a documentary that honours her life and brilliance as an athlete, not just the tragedy.”
In an interview with Time, Zenovich said of Wilson: “She was a young woman who was kind of on the cusp, she had found what she loved to do. And she was incredibly good at it.” Evans added that the documentary serves as a reminder of “how to treat your neighbour, how to be a part of a community” and “that violence is never the answer.”
