Netflix subscribers across the UK were met with frustration on Wednesday as the streaming giant's platform briefly crashed, coinciding with the highly anticipated release of Stranger Things season five, volume one.
Viewers eagerly attempting to access the new episodes were instead greeted by an error message stating 'Something went wrong', which prevented them from starting the show. The outage, which caused widespread annoyance, was reported to have lasted for approximately three minutes.
Social Media Erupts as Fans Voice Fury
The temporary service failure prompted an immediate and vocal backlash from disappointed fans on social media platforms. Many took to X (formerly Twitter) and other sites to express their irritation at being unable to watch the new series the moment it dropped.
This public outcry highlighted the intense demand and excitement surrounding the final season's premiere.
A Recurring Problem for Netflix
In a statement given to Variety, a Netflix spokesperson addressed the incident, confirming: “Some members briefly experienced an issue streaming on TV devices, but service recovered for all accounts within five minutes.”
This is not the first time Netflix has encountered such technical difficulties during a major release. The platform suffered from similar server issues back in 2022 during the debut of the show's fourth season, indicating a recurring challenge for the streamer during peak demand events.
