Netflix has cancelled the animated franchise reboot series 'Terminator Zero' after just one season, creator Mattson Tomlin confirmed on social media.
In a post on X, Tomlin said: “The critical and audience reception to it was tremendous, but at the end of the day not nearly enough people watched it. I would’ve loved to deliver on the Future War I had planned in seasons 2 and 3, but I’m also very happy with how it feels contained as is.”
The series, set in the aftermath of 1991's 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day', featured a dual timeline: 2022, where a future war rages between humans and machines, and 1997, when Skynet gains self-awareness. The plot follows a soldier (voiced by Sonoya Mizuno) sent back to 1997 to protect scientist Malcolm Lee (André Holland), who is creating a new AI to compete with Skynet. Rosario Dawson voiced the new AI system.
Tomlin served as creator, writer and showrunner, executive producing alongside Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger. Masashi Kudo directed, with Production IG as the animation studio.
Tomlin added that he had written all of season two scripts and outlined season three, hinting that he might “return to that world in a different form”. He also criticised streaming algorithms, stating that “nobody’s ‘algorithm’ is any good”.
