Netflix has cancelled the popular gay military drama Boots after just one season, sparking outrage among subscribers. The show, which premiered in October 2025, became a sleeper hit and consistently appeared in the platform’s top 10 most-watched shows, leading many to expect a renewal.
The cancellation follows criticism from the Pentagon’s press secretary Kingsley Wilson, who branded the series “woke garbage”. Boots follows a closeted teenager who enlists in the US Marine Corps in the 1990s, when being openly gay in the military was illegal. Wilson told Entertainment Weekly that the military “will not compromise our standards to satisfy an ideological agenda”.
Writer Paul Rudnick led the backlash, calling the decision “cowardly” on social media. The show is based on Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine, and stars Miles Heizer as Cameron Cope. White expressed gratitude for the support, saying his “sadness is soaked in gratitude”.
Fans also voiced frustration, with one saying: “Another show cut before it could breathe, Boots deserved time not silence.” The cancellation adds to a list of recent Netflix shows axed prematurely, including Shadow and Bone, 1899, Kaos and The Waterfront.
